COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The St. Cloud Planning Commission will hold a public hearing Tuesday night to review Center City Housing's proposal to turn the vacant St. Anthony's Church property into 40 supportive housing units for very low-income residents. The request would amend the existing PUD layout.  WJON

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Costco is set to open in Otsego this fall+ the new store is expected to ease the load at busy locations in Maple Grove and St. Cloud while road construction continues near Albertville.  WJON

CULTURE NEWS

  • Historian Jim Grabinski and former department store employees shared memories of Herberger’s and Dayton’s as Macy’s at Crossroads will close later this year, marking a turning point for community retail in St. Cloud.  WJON

EDUCATION NEWS

  • St. Cloud Technical & Community College’s nursing program secured a 10-year accreditation from the National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation after a review that included an on-site evaluation in late September; the program, ranked second statewide, will be next reviewed in spring 2035.  KNSI
  • Apollo High biology teacher Devon Bowker (a finalist for Minnesota Teacher of the Year) and Lincoln Elementary fourth-grade teacher Paige Janorschke (also a finalist) will be interviewed on May 2 by Education Minnesota’s panel, with the honoree announced on May 3 at the St. Paul RiverCentre.  WJON
  • Fifty-one high school teams are competing in the FIRST Robotics Granite City Regional at Rivers Edge Convention Center this week. The tournament began on Wednesday and wraps up today in downtown St. Cloud (challenging students to design, build, and program industrial-sized robots).  WJON
  • United Way of Central Minnesota will host its Imagination Library Progressive Dinner in St. Cloud on Saturday, May 2 to boost children's literacy. Guests choose a theme and enjoy multiple courses while supporting a five-year program that funds books for young readers at $175 per child.  WJON

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials will hold a public hearing Tuesday night on a plan to sell the former Media Services site to Gate City Bank, which would build a 7,000 sqft bank with a drive-thru and parking lot (the proposal includes future commercial use on the east side).  WJON
  • Youthset Teen Center is asking the city for planning commission approval to expand its facility at 1415 5th Street North by converting unused warehouse space into a gym + new rooms for enrolled teens and families. The commission will review the request on April 14 at 6:00 p.m. in the city council chambers at city hall.  KNSI

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • This summer, St. Cloud residents have four three-day holiday weekends to enjoy extra time off. Memorial Day (last Monday in May), Juneteenth, Fourth of July, and Labor Day (first Monday in September) give locals a chance to relax and plan short getaways while saving vacation days.  WJON

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Cathedral baseball team beat Little Falls 10-1 at the Municipal Athletic Complex on Thursday, April 9 with strong plays from Jake Murphy and Nick Plante. The team hosted Holy Family Catholic on Friday at the MAC in St. Cloud.  WJON
  • Today, Minnesota’s stream trout fishing season begins with the DNR noting quality opportunities across all six designated regions. Local anglers in Stearns County can fish streams like Luxemburg Creek + Willow Creek and must have a trout stamp with their license.  KNSI
