COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A six-bedroom home in St. Augusta set for demolition was used on Saturday as a controlled burn exercise that gave volunteer firefighters hands-on practice with fire conditions. Lutgen Construction worked with local fire departments for two months and will soon break ground on a new company headquarters on the site—using lessons learned from the training.  KNSI
  • The St. Cloud Police Department will host a Dog Walker Watch Meeting on April 22nd from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at its facility — Crime Prevention Specialist Emily Voigt will share tips on situational awareness as residents and their dogs attend.  KNSI

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Starbucks baristas in Sartell voted to unionize as they joined Starbucks Workers United at the location off Highway 15 and Riverside Avenue South—making it the 14th Minnesota store and second in the area to unionize. More than 11,000 workers at 570 stores nationwide have joined the union as contract talks continue.  KNSI

CRIME NEWS

  • On April 8, investigators from the Central Minnesota Violent Offenders Task Force executed four search warrants in Stearns County related to a federal probe into alleged drug distribution and gun possession at homes in Spring Hill Township, Melrose, and Sauk Centre—resulting in charges against four individuals, including two taken into federal custody.  WJON

CULTURE NEWS

  • A nationally acclaimed one-act play about veterans transitioning to civilian life will be performed at Pioneer Place on Fifth on May 1st, 2nd and 3rd at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale at $32 for general admission and $22 for veterans and active military— the event aims to offer veterans a chance to process their experiences and connect with the actors.  WJON

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Two Minnesota senators toured St. Cloud Monday as Majority Leader Erin Murphy visited Koltes Farm with Senator Aric Putnam — she later toured the nearly complete Great River Children’s Museum and held a veterans town hall. They will host a town hall meeting on Thursday evening with local lawmaker Dan Wolgamott to discuss federal spending cuts after veterans protested near Apollo High School and the VA campus.  KNSI
  • In March, the City of St. Cloud asked residents for input on downtown development by launching an online survey about housing, entertainment, parking, and aesthetics — letting people design their vision with an interactive mapping tool. The survey will expand to include Division Street and Haven Township in May and June, and an in-person workshop is scheduled for May 7th to discuss the ideas further.  KNSI
  • St. Cloud faith leaders and advocates will meet at Salem Lutheran Church on Saturday, April 26 at 10:00 a.m. organized by Anne Buckvold to campaign for increased Amtrak service with new routes to Moorhead, Chicago, and Duluth after Northstar Commuter Rail service is set to shift to buses.  KNSI

HEALTH NEWS

  • Central Minnesota Mental Health Center is restructuring after insurance companies cut reimbursement rates, which led to laying off two case management coordinators and one detox staff member while 45 to 60 clients were redirected to local agencies. The center maintains full occupancy in its 16-bed withdrawal management unit—recruiting replacements to keep critical care available.  KNSI
