COMMUNITY NEWS

  • St. Cloud is set to see nearly $5.7 million in upgrades at Whitney Regional Park with paved trails, baseball lighting, a new playground, and a pickleball complex funded by a $101,500 donation from Northern Paddles Pickleball Club — construction will begin next month and continue through the fall while the park remains open.  WJON

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Milaca teen was hospitalized in critical condition with a severe brain injury after two crashes on April 9th in Clear Lake Township when a wrong way driver and a state trooper collided with his pickup—his brother also suffered a ruptured eye, cuts, and a torn ACL in the accident.  KNSI

CRIME NEWS

  • Police in Sauk Centre rescued an alleged arsonist from a burning home on Ash Street just after 7:30 a.m. Thursday—witnesses reported the fire was set intentionally, the suspect was found incapacitated in the basement and airlifted to a burn unit, and a male victim with a severe head injury was taken to a hospital.  WJON

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Great River Children's Museum in downtown St. Cloud is making progress as four full-time staff move in this week and concrete is poured for a 35-foot water table in the Great Big River exhibit — artist Annette S. Lee is finalizing an immersive audiovisual experience that spans a simulated 24-hour period. Board member Heidi Everett, who has been involved since the former Liberty Bank building was donated, said the museum does not have an opening date yet but is already selling year-long memberships with early access and discounts.  WJON

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Over 10,000 people were hired in March as payrolls rose 0.4%—four times the national rate—according to the Department of Employment and Economic Development, even though seasonal factors raised the unemployment rate to 3.1%. The St. Cloud area saw 518 new hires which outpaced some regions but trailed Rochester and the Minneapolis-St. Paul Metro.  KNSI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Due to state aid uncertainty, Minnesota State System schools including St. Cloud Technical and Community College and St. Cloud State University may raise tuition this summer by 3.5% to 9%—the largest potential increase in nearly 12 years; officials are consulting with student government and have not made a final decision.  KNSI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The St. Cloud City Council will approve a contract Monday night with Knife River Corporation to lead a $5.6 million project to improve Whitney Regional Park—plans include new parking, athletic fields, trails, handicap access, eight pickleball courts and more, with funding from donations, grants and the local sales tax. The council will meet at 6:00 p.m. inside City Hall.  KNSI
  • The Stearns County Sheriff's Office launched the free Take Me Home program to help residents care for loved ones who may have trouble speaking or explaining who they are in an emergency—families can enroll by submitting key details and a digital photo for quick access by dispatchers.  WJON
