COMMUNITY NEWS

  • This week during National Volunteer Recognition Week, the Greater St. Cloud Area RSVP celebrates retired volunteer Linda Fuchs for dedicating 5-15 hours a week to helping seniors & the community at places like the Whitney Senior Center. Fuchs encourages others to seek volunteer opportunities that fit their schedules.  WJON

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On April 15, a historic fraternity house used by SCSU caught fire at 611 5th Avenue South, and firefighters helped residents escape while one person was taken by ambulance; 11 residents received aid from the Red Cross & the fire cause is under investigation.  WJON

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A proposed cannabis cultivation facility near Apollo High School cleared the final city hurdle Tuesday night with a 370-foot variance, permitting use of a 115,000 sqft warehouse and creation of about 100 union jobs + boosting economic output. Construction will take six months pending Office of Cannabis Management approval.  KNSI
  • A delegation of Central Minnesota business leaders is meeting lawmakers in Washington, D.C. this week. Organized by the St. Cloud Area Chamber of Commerce, the group will tour the White House Tuesday morning (a first for the delegation) and return on Thursday.  WJON

CULTURE NEWS

  • Country superstar Lee Brice will perform at The Ledge Amphitheater in Waite Park on Friday, June 12; tickets go on sale Friday, April 24 at 10 a.m. and his new album Sunriser drops on June 5.  WJON
  • The St. Cloud Municipal Band presents its Heroic Music concert tomorrow at Tech High School at 7:00 p.m.—the event features film-inspired pieces including the Superman theme and a Star Wars march, with tickets at $15 for adults, $12 for seniors, and free for students 17 and under.  WJON
  • Paramount Center for the Arts has announced its May lineup of concerts, comedy, aerial shows and art classes. Rock band Quiet Riot will head the show on May 8 at 7:30 p.m., with additional events scheduled later in the month including concerts, comedy and art workshops.  KNSI

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gate City Bank will buy a lot for $1.4 million to build a 7,000 sqft branch on Division Street near City Hall in St. Cloud. A public hearing is set for May 4 at 6 p.m. to review the project and its potential to add 85-147 rush-hour trips.  St. Cloud Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Women veterans in central Minnesota will attend a free benefits seminar hosted by the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs on Saturday, Apr. 25 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at VFW Granite Post in St. Cloud plus connect with peers over light snacks.  KNSI
  • This spring the LEAF 742 Education Foundation awarded over $27,000 in grants to boost extracurricular programs across District 742, including installing a new outdoor water station at North Junior High for thirsty athletes.  WJON

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Earth Day, the city marks over a decade of progress as all municipal buildings run on renewable energy. City leaders say 16 solar arrays and evolving programs will boost electricity neutrality by 2028 + carbon neutrality in transportation and heating by 2038.  KNSI
  • Today, St. Cloud expanded its recycling program to accept household items — including glass, paper and plastics — beyond the blue cart and urges residents to clean items before recycling. Additional drop-off options for cooking fats and hazardous waste are offered; residents should check the county’s Waste Wizard for guidelines.  KNSI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Stearns County Board of Commissioners voted Tuesday to allow rifles for deer hunting this season, aligning local rules with state regulations (following extensive public input).  KNSI

  • St. Cloud edged Sartell 5-4 on Monday, April 20 in a nail-biter softball match, marking another competitive win as the team built on its season record.  WJON
