COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Clearwater teacher and veteran Joe McNee passed away on Sunday, April 19 at age 92 — a memorial service is set for Monday, April 27 at 11 a.m. at Benson Funeral Home in St. Cloud, where family and friends will gather.  WJON
  • Sauk Rapids, founded in 1851 along the Mississippi, grew from a trading post into a resilient town after overcoming the 1886 tornado + later revitalizing its downtown with a new bridge linking it to St. Cloud. Community efforts now include park improvements and annual events that bring neighbors together.  WJON
  • Local entrepreneur Randy Northey died April 21 at home. His family will host a visitation (4:00 to 7:00 p.m.) on May 1 at Daniel Funeral Home and a celebration (3:00 to 7:00 p.m.) on May 2 at Howie’s Bar and Grill in St. Cloud.  WJON

BUSINESS NEWS

  • After nearly two years without a local Party City, residents learned the brand is returning as a section in Staples stores nationwide, though shoppers must drive to Minnetonka since the local store closed years ago.  WJON

CULTURE NEWS

  • Celebrate MN announced the September concert at the Ledge Amphitheater in Waite Park — co-headliners Walker Hayes and Crowder perform Friday, Sept. 18, followed by KB and Toby Mac Saturday, Sept. 19. Tickets go on venue-only pre-sale Tuesday, Apr. 28 at 10:00 a.m. with general sale on May 1 at 10:00 a.m.  KNSI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • St. Cloud State University will change its dining provider to Sodexo in July, triggering 153 layoffs from Chartwells. The university chose Sodexo based on campus feedback and will share more details about updated dining options soon.  WJON

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Ponds around town are losing water because a dry, windy spring is lowering levels and affecting wildlife habitats (especially waterfowl) as the walleye opener in May nears. Experts say most lakes will be ice-free by then.  WJON
  • The Minnesota DNR Eagle Cam shows four-week-old eaglets in their nest practicing wing flaps and balancing better as they build strength for flight (the chicks still depend on their parents for food).  WJON
  • Stearns County’s Household Hazardous Waste truck is in Paynesville today at Koronis Civic Arena — from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. — to collect household items that cannot be disposed of in regular trash. The free service is for Stearns County residents only.  KNSI

SPORTS NEWS

  • The St. Cloud Crush boys lacrosse team won 9-6 over Brainerd (Thursday night), improving their record to 2-2. They will host Big Lake/Princeton in their next game on Tuesday, April 28.  WJON
