COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Paul Wirth and Kathy Kampa will perform at Dancing With Our Stars Live on Monday, June 8th at The College of St. Benedict. Their soft shoe/ballroom fusion to 'You Make Me Feel So Young' will raise funds for the Wirth Center’s new space in the former Daniel Building downtown.  WJON

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The school district will break ground on Tuesday, May 5 at 2:00 p.m. for the new APEX Athletics Center at Apollo High School. The 70,000 sqft, $15M indoor facility will feature a turf field, batting cages & more for both district teams and community use.  KNSI
  • St. Cloud Area School District leaders, Apollo's Justin Skaalerud and North Junior High's Sascha Hansen, were named Central Division Principal of the Year at the Minnesota Association of Secondary School Principals conference—Skaalerud led a $50 million Apollo renovation and Hansen has served as principal since July 2024.  KNSI
  • Tech and Apollo high schools hold graduation ceremonies on May 30 at Rivers Edge Convention Center in St. Cloud, with Apollo starting at 11 a.m. and Tech at 3:30 p.m. The district has hired a private security company (with metal detectors and clear bag rules) to secure the events.  WJON

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Stearns County Household Hazardous Waste tour will visit four sites next month for safe disposal of household items; stops include the Rec Building on May 6, Sauk Centre Hockey Arena on May 13, Melrose Fire Hall on May 20 and St. Anthony Church in Albany on May 27.  KNSI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Stearns County’s Household Hazardous Waste truck will stop in May at four sites—Greenwald Rec Building (May 6), Sauk Centre Hockey Arena (May 13), Melrose Fire Hall (May 20), and St. Anthony Church in Albany (May 27)—operating 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. to help residents safely dispose of hazardous items.  WJON
  • Stearns County will begin its annual roadside spraying in May to cut brush and clear sightlines along county highways. Property owners can opt out by filing an exemption form, posting Do Not Spray signs by May 15, and removing brush by June 15 (call 320-255-6180 for more details).  KNSI

SPORTS NEWS

  • St. Benedict’s College clinched the first Midwest Women's Flag Football Championship on Saturday at TCO Stadium in Eagan — finishing a 7-1 season with a 26-20 win over Concordia-Moorhead after a 13-12 victory against St. Olaf.  WJON
  • St. Cloud State's Shelby Kimm and Braya LaPlant will join the USA D2 Volleyball Team to compete in Brazil from May 11-20 (they meet for orientation in Orlando on May 11 and play in the International Challenge in Rio on May 16).  WJON
  • On Sunday (April 26), the Huskies beat the Jimmies 18-7 in a doubleheader at their home field with strong hits from Eric Bello and Wyatt Tweet. The Cyclones also secured wins over Anoka-Ramsey by out-hitting their opponents to boost their season record.  WJON
  • The Minnesota Frost secured a playoff spot and will face Montreal Victoire in a best-of-five semifinals game on Saturday, May 2 at 1 p.m. at Place Bell (their season record stands at 13-3-5-9) as they aim for a third straight Walter Cup title.  WJON
  • St. Benedict's lacrosse will face UW Eau Claire in the WIAC Quarterfinals tomorrow at 5 p.m. after securing the #5 seed with a 22 to 4 win at UW Stevens Point on Sunday (coach Patrick Crandall praised contributions from first year players and goaltender Ashley Fischer).  WJON
