COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Sartell Police will host a ball on May 7th from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Lions Park to celebrate Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Week with free activities, including a bounce house, obstacle course, raffle drawings, bike passport, helmet fittings, and a fire truck display (overflow parking is available at Sartell City Hall) while hot dogs will be served.  KNSI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Sauk Rapids-Rice culinary team will compete in Baltimore this Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in the National ProStart Invitational management competition. Teacher Mary Levinski said the team qualified by winning the state event in March and will showcase its Korean Street Food concept—the Hungry Piranha—which highlights five top culinary trends.  WJON
  • St. John's Prep received its largest gift in 168 years from alumna Ann Stock and her husband, David Campagna—money that pushed the school’s campaign past its $10 million goal and raised over $12.5 million for scholarships, faculty, facilities and financial aid.  WJON

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Stearns County will begin repaving three roads next week, including a busy corridor connecting St. Cloud and Sartell, and drivers should expect delays along CSAH 1—where a mill and overlay will run from CSAH 120 to 9th Avenue North near the Sauk Rapids bridge. Other work on CSAH 40 and County Road 156 is set from May 5th to June 13th by Central Specialties of Alexandria.  KNSI

HEALTH NEWS

  • New statistics from the Alzheimer’s Association revealed over 7 million Americans have the disease, including 101,900 Minnesotans over 65, and 2,358 people died from Alzheimer’s last year. A study of Finnish men found that using the sauna 4-7 times a week lowered dementia risk by 66% and Alzheimer’s risk by 65%—experts advise locals to consult a doctor before changing their routine if they have health concerns.  WJON

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources said there are 11,842 lakes over 10 acres that give local anglers a chance to catch walleye, bass and pike. On WJON, Jake Juliot from Explore Minnesota explained 10 reasons to fish in the state and noted the walleye opener will begin May 10 — a prime time for anglers to plan trips — as Minnesota offers legendary fishing spots.  WJON

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Sabres Archery team, made up of 4th and 5th graders, became national champions in bullseye and 3D competitions earlier this month, according to coach Bob Brezinka. The team practices bullseye twice a week and 3D once a week, and their three-year rise has helped Central Minnesota’s youth archery scene gain national attention — their hard work is showing results.  KNSI
