COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Families can join the free Kids To Parks Day event at Quarry Park & Nature Preserve on Saturday, May 16 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at 1802 County Road 137 in Waite Park (activities include bird feeder making, fishing practice, RC racing, and guided bird hikes).  KNSI
  • Tri-County Humane Society is set to rehome 1,500 beagles released from a Wisconsin research facility. The group will travel to the Twin Cities the week of May 14 to evaluate, vaccinate, microchip and spay/neuter the dogs before they are cleared for adoption in St. Cloud.  KNSI

BUSINESS NEWS

  • St. Cloud City Council unanimously approved a plan for Gate City Bank to build a new branch on Division Street at the former District 742 Media Services site — the lot, once a school district facility, will feature a 29-space parking lot and reserve space on the east side for future commercial development.  WJON

CULTURE NEWS

  • Independent writers can submit their indie-published works to the Minnesota Author Project until May 31 for a chance to win $2,000 and a feature in Library Journal. Entries in three categories—including Communities Create—are open for both individual authors and collaborating groups.  WJON
  • Artist Charlie Maguire is on tour in central Minnesota, holding free concerts at Great River Regional Libraries and sharing songs that tell of real sailor life on the Great Lakes – inviting families to connect with local maritime history.  WJON
  • Great River Children's Museum in downtown St. Cloud earned an Innovation Award from Minnesota Brownfields for transforming the former Liberty Bank into one of the state's largest children’s museums (opened nearly a year ago in June after a multi-million dollar renovation).  WJON
  • Cirque Italia’s Paranormal Cirque Inferno will perform at Crossroads Center parking lot from May 29 to June 1, offering an adult-themed circus with acrobats, illusionists, and mysterious creatures. Tickets are available from $20 to $65 and require photo ID, with attendees under 17 needing an adult escort.  WJON
  • Pioneer Place on Fifth will host live music events featuring a 90s one-hit wonders show Friday at 7:30 p.m. and a Boston tribute on Saturday with limited tickets — the season finale with Granite City Radio Theatre and Matt Wilson is set for May 13, and shows run through June 6.  WJON
  • Country 250 will take place on August 1 at the Ledge Amphitheatre in Waite Park and will feature four music acts, drink sampling from Piatelli Vineyards, a VIP meet-and-greet, and an auction that benefits the Wounded Warriors Project.  WJON

EDUCATION NEWS

  • School board members and administrators held a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday at Apollo High School to start construction of the new Apex Athletics Center. The 70,000 sqft, $15 million facility will serve district teams + the community year-round.  KNSI

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • St. Cloud residents will join a community tree planting at Rotary Park East on Thursday, May 7th from 10:00 a.m. to noon to help grow the city’s tree canopy as part of a statewide initiative to cool urban heat islands.  KNSI

SPORTS NEWS

  • Town ball games this weekend (across local fields) showcased strong pitching and team effort. The Pirates beat the Rockies 6-1 while other games featured standout pitching from teams like the Saints and Silverstreaks.  WJON
  • Several local high school baseball games on May 2 and May 4 featured standout pitching and offense; Cathedral Crusaders edged Providence Academy Lions 3 to 1 (Henry Schloe’s seven strong innings) while Spectrum Sting and Foley Falcons split a doubleheader and other schools logged notable wins.  WJON
