  • St. Cloud is celebrating Safe Drinking Water Week through Saturday by honoring water professionals who work behind the scenes to keep tap water safe and clean. Public Utilities Director Luke Langner says workers manage treatment — including lab tests, maintenance and planned upgrades — to ensure reliable access for all residents.  WJON
  • Bill Nelson raised $53,430.72 for Tri-County Humane Society at the annual Wine, Kibbles + Bids event on Thursday, May 7 using community efforts like spaghetti dinners + meat raffles to combat pet overpopulation. Local residents supported his fundraiser through silent auctions and jar donations.  WJON
  • A celebration of Brenda Hesse's life is set for June 13 from 11 AM to 2 PM at the Cold Spring Event Center. Family and friends will gather to honor her warm spirit — memorial donations are requested for Quiet Oaks Hospice instead of sending flowers.  WJON

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • St. Cloud firefighters responded late Thursday afternoon to a fire at 1200 13th Street North that heavily damaged a residence and displaced six tenants, with the Red Cross providing support as discarded smoking materials caused the blaze.  WJON

  • Niron Magnetics got $400,000 from the state through the Job Skills Partnership grant to expand its workforce and boost high-volume manufacturing of rare-earth-free iron nitride magnets in Sartell. The company will partner with Hennepin Technical College for a 20-month training program.  KNSI

  • Local Minnesotans are preparing for fishing opener weekend, where cabin gatherings unite serious anglers and leisure seekers this weekend. The event showcases personalities like the overpacker and the influencer, crafting a mix of fishing culture and relaxed fun.  WJON

EDUCATION NEWS

  • St. Cloud State University will end its study abroad program at Alnwick Castle in December (2026) after more than 50 years of cultural exchange. University leaders made the decision as enrollment declined and costs rose, and they will focus on other global education programs.  WJON

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Anglers are warned by the DNR that earthworms, a common bait, are invasive and harm local ecosystems. The department urges proper bait disposal this weekend — unwanted bait should be trashed or composted to help protect local lakes.  WJON

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • St. Cloud Fire Chief Matt Love arrived in December 2021 after serving in Colorado and Florida and now leads efforts to improve response times and rebuild his department’s leadership. He brings extensive firefighting experience and a strong focus on community engagement.  WJON
  • St. Cloud Public Utilities today launched the MY360 portal—replacing WaterSmart and letting residents view water usage online and set alerts to prevent leaks and high bills.  KNSI

  • The Minnesota DNR advises local anglers to stay safe this fishing opener as lake water remains dangerously cold even with warmer air, so be cautious at busy public landings plus follow proper steps to drain boat water and avoid fines.  WJON
