COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Charlie's Corner Community Sports Court will host its grand opening Sunday, May 17, 2026, from 1 – 4 p.m. at the Omni Training Facility, with a ribbon-cutting at 1:30 p.m. The accessible court, created to honor local hockey player Charlie Boike, will feature sports and family activities.  WJON

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Backwards Bread in St. Cloud is asking neighbors to donate fresh rhubarb for its seasonal Rhubarb Croissants — donors will get a free pastry treat in return. The bakery accepts donations during May and June at its location and local farmers markets.  WJON
  • The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development launched the Choose Minnesota initiative to support local business owners facing rising costs and delays. A roundtable discussion will be held at the Chamber Building at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 27 (local owners can register with the Chamber).  KNSI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The St. Cloud Area School District will start summer renovations at several schools. Talahi Elementary will get a new roof and expanded parking lot with 40 spaces while Tech High updates restrooms and South Junior High gets a new track — projects aimed at improving school facilities.  WJON

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Planning Commission will review Center City Housing’s request for the Elm Ridge Apartments—a 40-unit supportive housing complex at 55 25th Avenue North—today at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall, as the nonprofit aims to address community feedback before a city council vote in June.  KNSI
  • Sartell City Council met Monday night to vote on a $20,000 grant from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources ReLeaf Grant Program. The funds will support a sustainable wood waste and urban forestry management plan to address the emerald ash borer in the area.  WJON
  • City staff recommend moving the James J. Hill statue and plaza from the city hall campus to near the STARail rail yard in Waite Park because high repair costs make staying impractical; local partners will cover the move as part of a broader redevelopment plan.  KNSI
  • Commissioner Varilek launched the Choose Minnesota initiative today in St. Cloud to support small businesses with forgivable loans and workforce development programs. He will hold additional roundtable sessions in Rochester, Duluth, and Bemidji in coming weeks (small business owners expressed urgent concerns).  WJON

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Minnesota Stroke Association will host the Strides for Stroke Walk this Saturday at CentraCare Health Plaza (1900 CentraCare Circle) with on-site registration beginning at 9:00 a.m. and stroke honoree recognition at 9:45 a.m., inviting families and friends to help raise funds and awareness.  KNSI

SPORTS NEWS

  • St. Ben's softball team won its first MIAC tournament title Saturday in St. Joseph by beating St. Catherine and St. Mary's to extend its win streak to 22 games, and the team will learn its NCAA matchups later today.  WJON
  • On Sunday, May 10, local baseball teams put on strong performances as the Cold Spring Rockies crushed the Eden Valley Hawks 24-1 + David Jonas led with a home run and five RBIs while teams across the region posted standout pitching and offense.  WJON
  • Adrian Peterson will be inducted into the Vikings Ring of Honor this season as the team celebrates his career achievements & MVP season. The former running back played for the Vikings from 2007 to 2016 and will join 28 current honorees.  WJON
  • St. Cloud State's softball team will open its NCAA Division II Tournament at 5:30 p.m. May 14 in Joplin—facing Southern Arkansas for the first time. The Huskies earned an at-large bid after a record season marked by a share of the NSIC Regular Season Championship and 46 wins.  WJON
