COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Meet Shorty, a 5-year-old dog at Tri-County Humane Society in St. Cloud—she is house-trained and good with children but may not mix well with cats—and her adoption fee is $50.  WJON

EDUCATION NEWS

  • St. Cloud State University has been awarded $20,000 from the Xcel Energy Foundation for scholarships in energy studies – the grant will help students in energy programs and interested students should contact the SCSU Financial Aid Office for details.  KNSI
  • Candidates for the vacant District 742 School Board seat began filing on July 29th at the St. Cloud Area School District Administration Office or at the Waite Park office at 1201 2nd Street South with a $2.00 fee or a petition with 500 signatures, and filing closes on August 12th. The seat became vacant when Bruce Hentges resigned in February due to health concerns—former board member Al Dahlgren is serving temporarily until a special election on November 4th.  KNSI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pedestrians in Cold Spring near ROCORI High School will get new sidewalks, pedestrian refuge islands, and signage along County Road 2 starting in 2026 thanks to a state Active Transportation grant. Stearns County hired Stonebrook Engineering—at a cost of just over $89,000—to manage the project after complaints about speeding vehicles were made.  WJON
  • Construction crews will begin tearing up 200th Street East between County Road 145 and 21st Avenue East in Lynden Township on Monday, August 4th for a resurfacing project that will close the roadway for months (weather-dependent dates and timeframes) and drivers should expect delays (no detour will be posted) as they navigate the work zone.  KNSI
  • The Department of Natural Resources announced that new deer hunting rules will take effect this fall as tags go on sale starting Friday, August 1—hunters will use a single statewide license and self-service stations will be set up for chronic wasting disease testing in targeted zones—bag limits are also adjusted to support deer population management.  KNSI
  • An emergency utility repair on Veterans Drive between 28th and 30th Avenues is limiting lanes to one in each direction—crews use flag control as officials warn that the work will continue until at least the end of Thursday.  KNSI
