- ➤ The Stearns History Museum and Reuse Minnesota will hold a free fix-it clinic at Whitney Senior Center on August 15 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.—residents must pre-register and can request repairs for up to two items, including small appliances, electronics, toys and textiles. Skilled volunteers are invited to join the event team as the project is funded by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency’s Statewide Waste Reduction and Reuse grant. WJON
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ On Tuesday afternoon, deputies in Forest City Township rescued 44-year-old Rae Kurtz of Darwin on the Crow River when strong currents swept her away during a tubing trip, forcing her to cling to a fallen tree until help arrived — both she and one deputy were treated while Sheriff Brian Cruze warned that high water levels and downed trees make tubing dangerous. - ➤ Quarry Park now offers free birding kits donated by the Central Minnesota Audubon Society that include high-quality binoculars, a Birds of Minnesota guide, and a notebook; kits can be checked out during staffed hours at the park gatehouse or the Stearns County Parks Office in Waite Park. Visitors do not need to reserve a kit and are invited to report bird sightings—helping document local species in the park’s woodlands, wetlands, and open spaces. KNSI
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Stearns County property owners may face higher taxes in 2026 if spending grows above property values since county departments asked for nearly $109 million—administrators might trim the request to $106 million but any increase over a 5.6% rise in property values will lead to rising rates; the board will review the preliminary budget on August 12 and adopt the final version in December. - ➤ Local officials announced that 24th Avenue North will be closed from 4th Street North to 5th Street North on Tuesday, August 5 (4:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.) for a private event. City of St. Cloud
