COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Sartell High School’s athletic program will host its third Annual Tackle Cancer Game on September 12th—featuring volleyball and hockey events to raise funds for cancer research and support local families. Local partners including St. Cloud Financial Credit Union and St. Cloud Subaru have joined the effort and additional events are planned on September 25th and January 15th. WJON
- ➤ Linda and Mark Hoffman built the 2018 memorial at Peterson’s Tree Farm in Becker to honor over 7,000 fallen Iraq and Afghanistan veterans by displaying a dog tag for each soldier along a chain-link fence — the couple travels from Vermont to maintain the site and will finish a reference book this Labor Day weekend to help visitors find names. - ➤ Sauk Centre Police are asking for help finding 15-year-old Caden Hooper—he was last seen at his home about 7:30 p.m. Sunday night and is described as a white boy with brown hair and brown eyes, standing 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing about 300 pounds. WJON
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Pioneer Place on Fifth in St. Cloud is gearing up for a busy fall season with strong ticket sales for tribute shows — a Boston tribute on September 6, Heart and Solid Gold Rock Anthems on September 12, and a 7 Wonders of Rock event on September 13—and more performances planned through the holiday season. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ St. Ben’s and St. John’s have begun an active academic year with strong enrollment for the Class of 2029 as first-year students join diverse programs and engage in community work at Salem Lutheran Church in East St. Cloud—nursing students lead local outreach efforts amid ongoing visa challenges for international students. The campuses will also host athletic events, including a volleyball tournament on Friday and Saturday and a soccer season opener on Friday. WJON
- ➤ SCTCC has named Alberto Ramos as the new Vice President of Community, Culture, and Institutional Climate; he started last week and brings experience from Plymouth State University and Minnesota colleges—he is a double alum of St. Cloud State University and is now pursuing his doctorate. The appointment aims to build a welcoming environment for all students, faculty, and staff. WJON
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Stearns County is asking for public input on hunting rules at the new Chain of Lakes Park after neighbors raised concerns about firearms near their homes. The park will allow shotgun hunting for small game, turkey, and waterfowl and offer archery and crossbow hunting for deer with no rifles or buckshot permitted — a no firearm zone of 250 feet is planned along homes, and residents may share feedback today at the county board meeting at 9:00 a.m. KNSI
- ➤ The Sauk Rapids City Council is set to resubmit state requests—one to secure $3.5 million for PFAS cleanup and another for a new athletic complex at Mayhew Creek Park—by September 17; local groups have already upgraded sports fields and voters backed improvements that could lead to varsity stadiums if the state matches local funds. - ➤ Cathedral alum Nate Schmidt, who raised the Stanley Cup in June when the Florida Panthers won the NHL title, brought the trophy to the Municipal Athletic Complex where it was on display Monday, August 25th from noon to 2:00 p.m.—arena doors opened at 11:00 a.m. Schmidt played college hockey at the University of Minnesota before starting his NHL career.
