COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Sartell Lions Club is hosting Oktoberfest this Saturday from 12:00-6:00 p.m. at Coborn’s Liquor parking lot at 1710 Pinecone Road South—offering a food and beer menu, kid activities, live polka music, and costume contests with prizes. Proceeds will go toward making improvements at the inclusive playground at Lions Park.  KNSI
  • RSVP Director Jennifer Wucherer earned the Innovation Service Award—presented by AmeriCorps—for boosting volunteer numbers and social connections among older adults. She has worked with RSVP for 25 years and helped increase the volunteer membership to more than 1,200 across our community.  WJON
  • Downtown St. Cloud hosts the second annual Festi-Fall today with a free farmers market at the Lady Slipper Lot, Oktoberfest events with a stein hoisting competition, games and German food at Beaver Island Brewing, and St. Cloud Pride in the Park at Eastman Park. The celebration continues Sunday, September 21 with a ten‐block street fair along East St. Germain Street featuring food trucks, live bands, children’s activities and a broadcast of the Vikings game — funds raised will support neighborhood improvements.  KNSI

BUSINESS NEWS

  • 7 Brew will open its new coffee shop at 4149 W Division St on Sept. 29 and will host free drink events during a friends and family weekend from Sept. 26 to Sept. 28 plus community hours from Sept. 29 to Oct. 3. Owner Max Wilson said the team practiced by serving nearly 12,000 free drinks to local businesses as they prepare for a large turnout on opening day.  St. Cloud Times
  • Clare and Brandon Richards from St. Cloud's Impacks are preparing for the Minnesota Cup finals on October 6—where they will pitch for a $50,000 prize while showcasing their school supply platform that supports over 300 schools and matches donations. The competition features 90 start-ups—followed by a public event from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the McNamara Alumni Center at the University of Minnesota.  WJON

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Minnesota employers added 5,900 jobs in August while the overall state job market improved; however, St. Cloud lost jobs compared to last year and the unemployment rate edged to 3.6 as construction, education, and health services led gains while manufacturing dropped 900 jobs—indicating mixed results statewide.  KNSI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The St. Cloud Area School District’s AdoptAClassroom program invites locals to support teachers by donating $250 to provide supplies like science kits and sheet music with all funds going directly to classrooms plus the fundraiser, which has raised over $365,000 since 2011, stays open through the end of this month.  WJON
  • St. John's Prep's middle school play 'Bernice Bobs Her Hair' began yesterday—starring an all middle school cast at the Weber Center—and will continue today and tomorrow as part of a busy fall season.  WJON
  • District 742 Local Education and Activities Foundation launched its Adopt-A-Classroom program to support teachers and students—donations will fund essential supplies like science kits and food for classroom pets—with a $250 tax-deductible option available until September 30. The program helps ease the financial burden on teachers who spend their own money on classroom needs.  KNSI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Utility work along Washington Memorial Drive will shift both northbound and southbound lanes from 8th Street South to University Drive next Tuesday. Drivers may face delays—if weather cooperates, the project will finish in one day.  KNSI

HEALTH NEWS

  • Construction is underway at 302 5th Avenue South where a former Methodist church is being changed into Ascension Recovery Services — a treatment center that will help people with addiction by offering detox, residential care, walk-in checks, and therapy. Mayor Jake Anderson said the facility will have 48 beds and create 43 full-time jobs to support community recovery.  WJON
