COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Central Minnesota Habitat for Humanity is set to help over five families secure homes this year using a new open market program—more than doubling past efforts. The nonprofit is partnering with local schools to build homes and expects to expand services further next year.  WJON
  • Sassy, a 3-year-old, 62-pound mixed breed at TriCounty Humane Society in St. Cloud, is waiting for a new family and enjoys daily walks and playful catch but needs obedience training before joining a home.  WJON
  • Avivo will break ground on a new homeless shelter in St. Cloud this Friday, Sept. 26 at 10 a.m. at 3100 First St. S— the facility will feature 48 private dwellings, 24/7 security and mental health services as its second shelter following the Minneapolis opening in 2020.  St. Cloud Times

BUSINESS NEWS

  • St. Cloud readers cast over 7,800 votes that named Under the Hood Grill and Catering their favorite food truck with 4,211 votes — 53.46% of the total — while Pit Stop BBQ and Betty’s Shrimp Bucket finished second and third. The vote results showed strong local support for a mix of grilled and seafood dishes.  St. Cloud Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • Urban Classics will perform Earth, Wind — Fire hits at St. Cloud's Paramount Theater this Friday at 7:30 p.m. as drummer Michael Bland—who has played with Prince—leads the band with tickets still available.  WJON
  • GREAT Theatre in Waite Park added an extra performance on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. after all eight scheduled shows for the sold-out 'Elephant and Piggie’s We Are in a Play Junior' (featuring an all-youth cast directed by high school students) sold out.  WJON
  • Lacey Fontaine has been named the new executive director at the Benton County Historical Society after Mary Ostby's unexpected death in July and will manage renovations and expand museum hours starting in October. She earned history degrees from St. Cloud State University and will work with dedicated volunteers to boost community involvement.  WJON

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Great River Children’s Museum offered a special $10 general admission on September 23 for families affected by the teacher in-service day—normally costing $14. The museum featured interactive science and art displays while open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  KNSI
  • AT&T donated $30,000 to the Boys & Girls Club of Central Minnesota on Tuesday to expand digital literacy programs for local youth. The grant will support staff training and provide 200 backpacks filled with school supplies to help children learn safe technology skills for future careers.  WJON

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Trooper Jesse Grabow shared traffic safety tips today on WJON, explaining that drivers should merge properly at the point of the zipper merge and follow roundabout rules. He also detailed police chase techniques such as stop sticks and the PIT maneuver—methods meant to reduce risks on our roads.  WJON
  • St. Cloud City Council approved a $16.3M bond sale Monday night that will fund street reconstruction on Pantown and Lincoln as well as new public safety radios, IT upgrades, snow removal equipment, and a fire rescue pump truck. Officials said the bonds passed with 11 bids that locked an interest rate below 3%—which will help keep taxpayer costs low through eventual property tax repayment.  KNSI
  • Cold Spring City Council is set to extend McDonald’s special use permit today by one year, giving the fast-food chain until September 25th to complete its drive-through design with a high fence that shields neighbors from headlights. The 5,000-square-foot site at 200 3rd Street South—designed for curbside pickup, drive-through service, and extended weekend hours—will help serve an area whose nearest location is in St. Joseph or Waite Park.  KNSI

HEALTH NEWS

  • CentraCare will offer drive-thru flu shot clinics at CentraCare Plaza on select Saturdays—September 27, October 4, October 11, and October 18—from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The clinics will serve individuals aged six months and older and will provide Flaud for patients 65 and older, with preferred appointments available by calling (320) 200-3200.  WJON

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Monday, the St. Cloud Youth Hockey Association donated $100,000 for naming rights to a dry land training facility at the Municipal Athletic Complex—this funding will support a 14,000 square-foot expansion that dedicates 4,000 square feet to training for hockey players and other athletes. The donation highlights a strong community partnership aimed at improving local athletic safety and conditioning.  KNSI
