COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Backwards Bread Company in St. Cloud will celebrate its sixth anniversary on Saturday, October 4 from 7 am to 1 pm at its location on Southway Drive—every customer will get a free butter croissant and the first 100 will receive a goodie bag while live music and free apple cider add to the festivities.  WJON
  • Socktober is underway as the United Way of Central Minnesota collects new socks and underwear at drop-off sites at the United Way office, Affinity Plus, and Scheels—donations will be distributed to schools and youth programs after October.  WJON

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Cold Press Cafe opened in Cold Spring in 2019 and roasts its own coffee and bakes pastries in-house — the shop displays local art on a handwritten menu and hosts community events like cookie sales and Bible studies.  St. Cloud Times
  • Allegiant Airlines will resume seasonal flights from Mesa to St. Cloud on Wednesday with a flight arriving at Sky Central Airport at 6:35 p.m. and departing at 7:25 p.m.—the service will run on Wednesdays and Saturdays until Christmas with an expanded schedule from January through April, while flights from Punta Gorda will resume on November 20 and run until April 5.  WJON
  • Xcel Energy opened its new utility service center in Waite Park on Wednesday with updated facilities designed for nearly 80 employees and 85 vehicles—improving the company’s response to outages. The center at 3683 5th Street South replaces the smaller facility and adds space for vehicle storage and materials.  WJON

CULTURE NEWS

  • A photo of University Bridge taken by Amy Hanfler won gold at the Greater St. Cloud Snapshot Challenge from more than 130 entries. Beth Ringsmuth-Stolpman and Bethany Domm earned second and third prizes — a People’s Choice Award vote will run from October 13th to 20th on the Greater St. Cloud Development Corporation Facebook page.  KNSI
  • The Stearns History Museum is hosting its annual Sundown Cemetery Tours at Calvary Cemetery in St. Cloud this Saturday and October 18th and at Oak Hill Cemetery in Melrose on October 11th and 25th—guides will share local stories from a pioneering doctor, Civil War veterans and a cigar maker on hour-long tours that start at 5:00 p.m. and cost $10, with free entry for museum members.  WJON

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The St. Cloud Fire Department will host an open house at Fire Station 3 on Wednesday, October 8th from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at 1201 University Drive Southeast — the event is part of National Fire Prevention Week and will focus on lithium-ion battery safety.  KNSI
  • Effective immediately through October 7, traffic on West St. Germain from 11th to 12th is under a temporary lane shift for planned sidewalk work—both east-bound and west-bound lanes are shifted north.  City of St. Cloud
  • Starting Monday, October 6, Lincoln Avenue NE will be closed for planned utility work for about 2 weeks—detours will guide local business access and through traffic will not be allowed.  City of St. Cloud
