COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Home for the Day Adult Day Center will host an open house on October 15 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Love of Christ Church on Pine Cone Road in St. Cloud — offering free food, tours and local resource details for seniors — to help the community learn about care services.  WJON

CULTURE NEWS

  • Ice Castles will return to the Minnesota State Fairgrounds at 3818 Randall Avenue with icy tunnels, slides, and rooms for a winter wonderland experience. Tickets go on sale December 2+ free parking is offered in the Robin Lot for family visitors.  WJON

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sauk Rapids-Rice Schools are planning a $37.2 million Early Childhood Center and a $17.7 million outdoor athletic complex next to the high school—both projects were approved by voters earlier this year. The district expects to bid in December or January, begin construction in spring, and finish the projects in August 2027.  WJON

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Department of Energy cut a $70 million grant for a clean energy battery project in Becker as part of broader funding cuts that have affected Minnesota's energy plans. Xcel Energy is shifting from coal to solar power and will use an advanced battery system to help meet high demand during outages — the move may lead to higher future energy rates.  KNSI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Utility work on Wilson Avenue Northeast in St. Cloud will close parts of the road from Monday, October 6th to Friday, October 17th — drivers are urged to use alternate routes.  KNSI
  • Sartell Mayor Ryan Fitzhum will deliver his annual State of the City address on October 14 at The Waters Church from 11:30 to 1:00, and all community members are welcome. Non-chamber members can register ahead for a $5 lunch — requests must be made to Chamber Executive Director Nikki Sweeter by October 10 via email.  KNSI

HEALTH NEWS

  • The St. Cloud Walk to End Alzheimer's will take place on Saturday, October 11th at the Lake George Municipal Complex—organizers said check-in starts at 9:00 a.m. and the opening ceremony is scheduled for 10:00 a.m., with a goal to raise $145,000 for dementia support and research.  WJON

SPORTS NEWS

  • St. Cloud MAC is adding a new dryland training facility funded by a $100,000 donation from the Youth Hockey Association to improve training for local athletes this winter—this upgrade includes turf practice areas and new locker rooms. The facility will be available for rental and is expected to be completed by January or February so teams can use it.  WJON
  • On October 2, Sauk Rapids-Rice won its volleyball match against ROCORI 3-1 with Claire Rogholt recording 11 kills—Josie Anderson and Stella Lambaere each had 10 kills to support the win. Other local high school teams, including Elk River and Cathedral, secured thrilling victories in their matches.  WJON
  • The Granite City Lumberjacks host the Mason City Toros this weekend at Miller Buick GMC Arena—both games start at 7:30 p.m. as the team aims to keep its 3-0 record, while the St. Cloud Norsemen begin a road series in Aberdeen against the Wings after their NAHL Showcase and will return home on October 18.  WJON
  • Last weekend, Minnesota's waterfowl hunting opener had clear skies and warm weather that kept hunter numbers low and led to mixed results across the state. In southern and western areas, recent rain increased waterfowl sightings and harvests of wood ducks, mallards, and teal—while northern reports noted mainly geese were shot.  WJON
