COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ As winter nears, St. Cloud leaders are urging the community to support shelters for those facing homelessness—overflow beds were activated this morning and a new 48-bed facility will open in the future to offer extra resources. Officials also encourage donations of winter clothing, funds, and volunteer time to help people in need. WJON
- ➤ St. Cloud Fire Department will host an open house tomorrow at Fire Station 3 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Fire Marshal Brian Kiffmeyer will share fire safety tips on lithium-ion batteries and cooking—key points of Fire Prevention Week—and the department will visit local schools and daycares with safety advice. - ➤ Today, the American Red Cross is asking local quilters to donate new handmade quilts or fleece blankets for veterans—items must be new and able to endure hospital washes—and support care for those who served. ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A 12-year-old boy crashed his bicycle on Sunday afternoon on Muskie Hill and suffered a severe head injury despite wearing a helmet, and he is now on life support in a pediatric intensive care unit at Hennepin County Medical Center — a CPR instructor and bystanders provided immediate help until paramedics arrived. - ➤ St. Cloud State University moved up three spots in U.S. News World Report’s 2026 Best Colleges Rankings—placing 33rd among top public universities in the Midwest and earning national recognition for its engineering, nursing, computer science, and psychology programs. The university reported that 95% of its graduates find work in their field within one year and earn a median salary of $47,200 six years after graduation. KNSI
- ➤ The Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Minnesota are celebrating 40 years of the KIDSTOP program—providing after-school care at local schools that began at South Elementary. The program has grown into a model used by districts nationwide and will continue serving children for decades. KNSI
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The St. Cloud City Council reviewed several development projects at Monday night’s meeting at city hall. The agenda included proposals to lower housing density, rezone properties, amend a cannabis dispensary to allow sales, establish film production incentives and authorize a temporary liquor license for a homecoming concert — moves that could reshape the city’s development. - ➤ The Minnesota Department of Transportation updated its Strategic Highway Safety Plan—using crash data analysis, driver input, and proven tactics—to work toward zero vehicle fatalities on roads from cities to rural areas. WJON
- ➤ Stearns County is reminding residents to submit the second property tax installment by Wednesday, October 15 using online, in-person, or mail options—credit card payments incur a 2.5% fee.
