COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ This weekend families will enjoy many Halloween events in the area, including Parktober at Wilson Park with pumpkin patches and hayrides, Boofest and a pumpkin carving party at Pine Grove Zoo on Thursday, and a costumed wrestling show at the Eagles Club on Saturday. Additional events include a free drum circle at Salem Lutheran Church on Sunday, a trunk-or-treat with dog washes in Waite Park, a fall craft and gift show at Crossroads Center, and a floating pumpkin patch at the YMCA that requires registration. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Gina Hugo, the local Parks Director, will appear on CBS Sunday Morning this Sunday between 7 and 8 a.m. to explain the story of the heart+land interpretive trail at Two Inlets Regional Park, where she and artist Lindsay Buck will share how history, art, and nature are connected. WJON
- ➤ Comedian Jason Schommer and musician Michael Shynes will perform their new show 'Relative Chaos! A Comedy About Family!' at Great River Arts on October 24—doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show begins at 7:30 p.m. with tickets priced at $25 for general admission. WJON
- ➤ Local tattoo shops Last Word, Cream City and Fresh Skin Tattoos will run a flash sale on Friday to support a new downtown sculpture walk—mini tattoos will take 15 to 30 minutes and cost between $125 and $150, with $25 from each sale going toward a $5,000 goal. WJON
- ➤ St. Cloud State University will host the Journey Across the World show on November 5 at the Paramount Center for the Arts — the event will feature 20 cultures and offer free tickets to enrolled students while community members pay $7.50. Shuttles will run from the Atwood Memorial Center to the theater as the show starts at 7:00 p.m. KNSI
- ➤ The Wirth Center for the Performing Arts is buying the former Daniel Building on 7th Avenue and will use the third floor for music programs while turning the first two floors into a community arts center with dance studios, early childhood music space and a large event area. They aim to complete the purchase by year end and move in early next year — the project is supported by a Downtown Revitalization Grant and a $500,000 grant from the Minnesota Department of Education. - ➤ The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources said that strong deer populations in central, southern, and northwestern areas promise good opportunities for hunters when the firearms season opens November 8; hunters in many central permit areas can take up to three deer — and those in Chronic Wasting Disease areas must have deer sampled. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Two local first responder agencies are among 53 statewide receiving up to $4,000 each from Compeer Financial’s Emergency Response Equipment Grants program to upgrade equipment and technology — Eden Valley Fire Department will buy wildfire gear and self-contained breathing apparatuses while Kimball Fire Department will purchase new firefighter boots. The program will expand in 2026 to provide awards of up to $7,500. KNSI
- ➤ The St. Cloud Chamber of Commerce held a Government Affairs meeting on Wednesday morning at its downtown office where Michael Olson, Midwest Regional Manager at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, explained that tariffs and the government shutdown have created uncertainty for local businesses—while the extension of the tax bill is expected to provide planning stability for next year. - ➤ The St. Cloud V.A. is launching a digital map that shows approved locations for veterans to safely store firearms during mental health crises, aiming to reduce the risk of firearm suicides. The service—developed with local partners like the Minnesota Medical Association and NAMI—provides address details for temporary storage. WJON
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Saint John's Prep won both the boys and girls team championships at the Central Minnesota Conference meet today at Ney Park in Maple Lake despite rainy, muddy conditions. Standout runners Margaret Duffy and Will Vix led their teams with top finishes. WJON
- ➤ Cathedral boys soccer clinched the Section 8A championship with a 3–1 win against East Grand Forks on Tuesday night in Sauk Centre when Jacob Oliver scored his 134th career goal and tied the season record with 51 goals—elevating the team's record to 17–1–1. The team will learn its state tournament seeding at a meeting scheduled for Saturday. WJON
- ➤ On Tuesday night, Sartell and Cathedral soccer teams clinched state tournament spots by winning their Section championships in Sauk Centre. Sartell earned a 2-0 shutout while Cathedral recorded record-breaking goals in 3-1 and 4-0 wins — setting the stage for state competition. WJON
