COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Dream Getaway contest returns October 20 as AM 1240 WJON will broadcast codes three times daily + listeners can also receive a bonus code on the station's mobile app for a chance to win a dream vacation.  WJON
  • A local radio station in Central Minnesota will start giving out codes at 9:10 a.m., 1:10 p.m. and 4:10 p.m. on weekdays beginning October 20 for a chance to win a dream vacation by Bursch Travel—listeners must put their codes in online by 7 p.m. daily and can get extra entries on Three for All Thursdays.  WJON
  • The Initiative Foundation awarded 17 grants totaling $740,000 via the Otto Bremer Trust’s Community Response Fund to boost mental health services, youth programs and education in the St. Cloud metro area—supporting essential nonprofit work.  WJON

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Minnesota Department of Transportation reported that 35 pedestrians have been killed statewide this year and urged St. Cloud drivers and walkers to follow simple safety tips to avoid further tragedies. Pedestrians should cross in well-lit spots and drivers must slow down and stop for pedestrians—steps aimed at reducing future accidents.  WJON

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A study used Google Trends to compare 98 fall items at Trader Joe’s and found that Savory Squash Pastry Bites are the top fall product for Minnesota shoppers—these pastry bites come in boxes of 12 and also top searches in Connecticut.  WJON

CRIME NEWS

  • The Minnesota Department of Human Services revoked the license of St. Cloud’s 24hrs Home Care LLC on Oct. 10 after its manager, Anwar Adow, was charged with fraud—he allegedly inflated billable hours at his other company, Liberty Plus LLC, which received over $1.2 million in Medicaid funds.  St. Cloud Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • EPIC Student Day will take place at SCTCC on Friday, October 24 and will bring 4,500 students from 40 high schools to explore various career clusters. The event offers hands-on experiences plus opportunities for students to learn the skills needed for local professions.  KNSI

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A WalletHub study released October 14 ranked Minnesota as the nation's ninth most energy-efficient state and seventh for home energy use—Vermont, California, Washington, and New York ranked higher overall. The study also noted that many people from other states are moving to Minnesota.  WJON

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Last weekend, hunters in southwestern Minnesota had strong success at the pheasant opener as clear skies and reduced crop cover helped many shoot their limit, while those in central areas struggled to find cover. Interest in duck and goose hunts grew and youth and antlerless deer hunts along with fall fishing for walleyes began as cooler temperatures encouraged more outdoor activity — adding more options for local recreation.  WJON

  • On Friday, the Gophers played Nebraska at 7 p.m. on Fox—seeking a win for bowl eligibility—while other key Big Ten games featured Washington at Michigan and Indiana hosting Michigan State.  WJON
