COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Anna Marie's Alliance will open its newly renovated shelter on October 23rd from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m.—the open house will include tours, a brief program at 4:00 p.m., and light refreshments. The facility now features one- and two-bedroom apartments and improved common areas to offer a more home-like setting for survivors of relationship abuse.  KNSI

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Rise Dispensary at 3800 Third St. N will soon offer recreational marijuana after the city council approved an amendment on Oct. 20 that lets the facility expand its sales while still focusing on medical cannabis—its longtime service since 2016 kept it competitive. Some council members raised concerns about zoning adjustments, but most backed the change for added safety and increased tax revenue.  St. Cloud Times
  • Minnesota Paving and Materials announced on Oct. 20 that its Waite Park and St. Cloud locations will close on Dec. 19, leading to permanent layoffs of all 297 employees—206 of whom work under a union contract; a parent company spokesperson did not comment.  St. Cloud Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Rocky Horror Tribute Show is happening on Friday night at the Red Carpet Night Club in downtown St. Cloud, offering a concert-style performance with live music and costumed performers singing classic Rocky Horror songs. Doors open at 8:00 p.m. and the show starts at 8:30 p.m. for a $5 admission fee (for ages 21 and older).  WJON
  • The Paramount Theater will host two more weekends of —9 to 5 The Musical— before its next big event. On November 5, St. Cloud State University will celebrate its international students’ heritages — a cultural showcase called Journey Across The World.  WJON

EDUCATION NEWS

  • St. Cloud State University hosts Homecoming events — including live music, games and sports matches on campus and downtown — with free outdoor concerts and a fireworks finale scheduled after Saturday’s hockey game.  WJON
  • Seniors in St. Cloud Area School District are joining the Future 100 initiative at Tech, Apollo, and McKinley schools this month to plan for college or local career paths. Community stakeholders are meeting with the students to help them connect with local colleges, military recruiters, and employers.  WJON

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Beginning at 7:00 a.m. on October 27, 29th Avenue South will be closed to thru traffic from 1 ½ Street S to 2nd Street S for planned private utility work—weather permitting, detours will be maintained until October 29.  City of St. Cloud
  • The Minnesota State Lottery announced changes today to its Minnesota Millionaire game in honor of its 20th anniversary — the update adds 40 extra $20,000 prizes along with five prizes each of $100,000, $50,000, and $25,000. Tickets went on sale on October 21st at $10 and winners will be drawn on New Year's Day.  WJON

  • The Apollo Eagles ended their season with a 3-0 loss to Little Falls on Monday night — they finished 0-23, and Little Falls will play top-seeded Sauk Rapids-Rice on Thursday night.  WJON
