COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A matching grant effort called the Norman C. Skalicky Community Challenge is underway until December 31 to raise money for area food shelves amid growing food insecurity. Donations made directly to Catholic Charities, St. Cloud Salvation Army & St. Joseph Community Food Shelf will be matched up to $150,000.  WJON
  • Vonnie Olsen, a cherished local mother, will be honored in a memorial service at 11 a.m. on November 17 at Salem Lutheran Church in St. Cloud. Visitation will begin one hour before the service with interment to follow at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls (arrangements managed by Miller-Carlin Funeral Homes).  WJON
  • Local coffee shops in St. Cloud offer distinct atmospheres and seasonal drinks like pumpkin spice and maple cinnamon lattes - and residents are invited to vote for their favorite spot in an ongoing community poll - that celebrates local flavor.  St. Cloud Times
  • Robert Abeln, a devoted family man and passionate hunter, died on November 2 at Quiet Oaks Hospice House in St. Cloud and will be laid to rest on November 11 at Saint John's Abbey in Collegeville—he is survived by his wife, children, and siblings.  WJON

  • Foley resident Dan Hanes runs Barntiques where he builds custom sheds using repurposed barn wood, tin ceilings, and special family keepsakes. His unique designs, including playhouses and chicken coops along Highway 23—are marked by visitors signing his workshop wall.  St. Cloud Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Stearns History Museum opens 'Get the Message' today at 10:00 a.m., showcasing vintage advertising signs from the late 19th century to the mid-20th. The exhibit — featuring restored and interactive pieces — will remain on display until 2027.  WJON

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The St. Cloud school board delayed choosing a name for the new indoor sports facility at Apollo High School that will host sports like soccer, softball, lacrosse, and more— and the board will decide on a final name in December after staff design logos for the candidates. This move comes as the facility is planned to include batting cages and golf simulators for extra training options.  KNSI
  • The Catholic Community Schools’ capital campaign received a $1 million matching gift from Cross Works Foundation that doubled every new donation toward a $6 million goal to strengthen Catholic education. The funds will pay down debt from Cathedral’s North Building expansion—upgrade HVAC systems at Cathedral and support professional development at CCS elementary schools.  KNSI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The St. Cloud Compost Site will be closed Tuesday, November 11th in observance of Veteran's Day and will reopen at noon Thursday, November 13th—contact Public Works at 320-650-2900 for details.  City of St. Cloud

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Modern Barnyard transforms into a Christmas Wonderland with twinkling lights and handmade gifts for the holiday season. The store will host a Christmas Open House this weekend—Saturday, November 8th, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sunday, November 9th, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.—with the first 50 customers spending $50 receiving a goodie bag.  WJON

SPORTS NEWS

  • Holdingford’s undefeated football team will face Barnesville tonight at 7 p.m. in Brainerd for a chance to move on to the state semifinals — coach Luke Mitchell said the team has outscored opponents this season with a balanced offense led by quarterback Jaxon Bartkowicz and a tough defense.  WJON
  • High school volleyball teams competed at Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul on Wednesday when Sauk Rapids-Rice lost 3 to 1 to Cretin-Derham Hall and Sartell fell 3 to 0 to Lakeville South. Sauk Rapids-Rice will play Big Lake at 9 a.m. today while Sartell was scheduled to play Rogers on Thursday.  WJON
