COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Anna Marie's Alliance, a shelter for domestic abuse survivors, is asking community members to volunteer for shoveling and snow blowing to keep its walkways safe this winter – volunteers will use provided equipment to help residents and workers access the facility during winter storms.  KNSI
  • Veterans and active duty military enjoyed free meals and discounts from various restaurants on Veterans Day yesterday—offers required a valid military ID or proof of service. The deals were available at many local and national chains, including Applebee’s, Arby’s and Buffalo Wild Wings.  KNSI

CULTURE NEWS

  • St. Cloud officials are inviting local artists to submit artwork for the downtown Art Wraps project that will print vinyl images on utility boxes and public spaces. The program aims to boost walkability and deter graffiti — submissions are due by Tuesday, November 25th at 4:00 p.m. and artists will be notified on Tuesday, December 16th.  KNSI
  • Great Theatre’s double-cast production of Annie will play at the Paramount Center for 11 public performances over three weekends beginning next weekend—rehearsals lasted six weeks and tickets remain available online.  WJON

EDUCATION NEWS

  • St. Cloud State University Career Center launched a program to award $1,200 stipends to unpaid interns working at local nonprofits this semester. Seven students—selected from 37 applications—will serve in roles from social work to event planning at organizations such as the YMCA and the Central Minnesota Sexual Assault Center.  WJON

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • After the first weekend of deer season, hunters have taken nearly 82,000 deer statewide—10,560 in central permit areas, and the season will continue until a half-hour past sunset on November 23.  WJON

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Stearns County lit its buildings in green from November 4 to 11 to honor veterans and their families during Operation Green Light+ a national effort led by NACo and County Veterans Service Officers that raised awareness of local, state, and federal support services. Local officials say the display signaled the county's ongoing commitment to its veterans.  WJON
  • Utility work on 5th Avenue South between 3rd Street South and Ramsey Place will slow traffic — lane shifts and no parking will be enforced until the project completes on November 26.  WJON
  • Stearns County will hold a tax forfeiture auction starting November 25 with online property listings available at 10am and bidding opening November 28 at 10am until December 16 at noon — buyers will pay extra fees as detailed on the county website.  WJON

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Pat Zook from the Dementia Community Action Network explained that maintaining a healthy diet, regular exercise, and social interaction from ages 25 to 30 can help prevent dementia and Alzheimer’s later in life — early signs include short-term memory loss and getting lost on familiar routes.  WJON

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Blondie is a gentle three-year-old collie mix at Tri-County Humane Society with a striking half-black—half-white face and a 51-pound frame; she is spayed, chipped and has done well with children. Staff say she warms up quickly to loving families, and interested adopters should schedule a meet-and-greet during shelter hours.  WJON
  • Local homeowners are saving on heating bills this winter by adding insulation to attics, sealing entry doors, and applying plastic film on windows—simple DIY fixes that keep warm air inside. Many residents plan to complete these cost-cutting projects before the weather turns colder.  WJON
