COMMUNITY NEWS

  • St. Cloud Park and Recreation is preparing skating rinks that should be ready next week after recent snow slowed flooding while sledding hills at Riverside and Calvary are open nightly from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Sunday programs in January and February offer free snowshoe and sled rentals.  WJON
  • The Initiative Foundation announced that twenty nonprofits across 14 counties will share $100,000 from the McKnight Foundation's Good Neighbor Grant program to provide food and shelter this holiday season; selected groups include those in Stearns (Arrive Ministries, CAIRO, Higher Ground Church) and Sherburne Counties.  KNSI
  • On Friday, Jan. 16, the MAC in Ritsche Arena will host the 3rd Annual Doxie Dash at 6 p.m.+ Dachshunds will race on the ice between hockey periods to honor Charlie Boike and support Ruff Start Rescue.  WJON

  • A Minnesota survey shows favorite Christmas movies vary widely — Home Alone, Christmas Vacation, Elf and Jingle All the Way are all named by Minnesotans for their holiday spirit and personal connection.  WJON

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Stearns County will launch an ongoing electronics recycling program on January 5th, 2026 at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility in Waite Park. Residents can drop off items Monday through Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. using the drive-thru system — screens cost $10 each.  KNSI

SPORTS NEWS

  • Granite City Sports has renewed its contract with the Rox to broadcast games live on AM 1390/FM 93.9 and online through at least 2028. The team will kick off the 2026 season on Friday, May 29 at Joe Faber Field with a home opener featuring fireworks and planned Kid's Days.  WJON
  • The Twins Winter Caravan will visit the Kelly Inn on January 21—doors open at 6:00 p.m. and the program begins at 7:00 p.m. with Twins players, ballpark bites, and guest autographs enabling support for local youth baseball via $8 tickets at WJON studios.  WJON
  • Ice fishermen face unstable conditions after 6 inches of heavy snowfall covered local lakes earlier this week (northern areas report thicker ice). Experts say caution is needed until colder weather stabilizes the ice and contests can resume safely.  WJON
