COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents in central Minnesota can get free help filing their taxes from AARP Tax-Aide; the service is available to seniors, low-income filers and others with simple returns by appointment via phone (320-200-9704). Volunteers complete each return using a thorough review process to maximize refunds.  WJON
  • St. Cloud State University will host its second annual Polar Plunge on Friday, March 20 at 4:00 p.m. on the north side of M Lot outside Halenbeck Hall to raise funds for Special Olympics Minnesota and help young athletes reach their summer competition dreams.  KNSI

CULTURE NEWS

  • Country songwriter and entertainer Keith Anderson will perform at the Paramount Center for the Arts on Friday, Mar. 6 at 7:30 p.m.—his Pickin’ Wildflowers 20th Anniversary Tour highlights his hit songs and career achievements. Tickets cost $25.50 for adults and $10 for students and are available on the Paramount website or by calling 320 259 5463.  KNSI

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A survey from CareerForce MN and the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development shows that many students in the St. Cloud region are choosing local fields such as healthcare, manufacturing, education, transportation, and skilled trades. The findings indicate 27% plan to stay nearby to pursue stable, quickly accessible jobs.  KNSI
  • A recent report from the Minnesota State Demographic Center shows Central Minnesota gained much in migration, with affordable living drawing young workers and easing workforce shortages. The trend, which accounted for 42% growth in 2023, could boost local economic stability.  WJON

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Garden Education Day will take place on Saturday, March 14 at the Gorecki Conference Center at the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, offering hands-on sessions, breakout workshops + expert panels for gardeners. Early registration is $40 until March 2, with classes running from 8 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.  WJON
  • The Rocori School Board accepted retirement notices for five longtime teachers who have more than 100 years of combined experience, and their retirement at the end of the school year will create big shoes to fill while one teacher remains to coach the dance team.  WJON

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Minnesota bill under review will make grooming minors a felony and ban one-on-one supervision during field trips + require updated teacher training to boost school safety. Proposed by Rep. Peggy Bennett, the measure will affect school districts including St. Cloud.  WJON
  • Stearns County Parks invites residents to review the Quarry Park and Nature Preserve master plan at an open house on Wednesday, Mar. 11 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the License Service Center in Waite Park — staff will gather feedback to guide future park investments.  KNSI

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Sabres will face Northern Lakes at 7 p.m. tonight at the MAC in St. Cloud for the Section 6A title; a win would give the program its first state tournament appearance and head coach Ryan Hacker says his team (24-3 record) is focused and ready for the challenge.  WJON
  • St. Cloud's Mike Schultz, a gold and silver medal para snowboarder, is heading to the Winter Paralympic Games in Milan next month in his final competition. He will race boardercross on March 7-8 and banked slalom on March 14 as he prepares to retire and focus on family.  St. Cloud Times
  • The St. Cloud Crush lacrosse team is inviting students from local schools to try out for the coming season, with captain practices starting March 9, official practices on March 30, and an informational meeting on March 23 (registration is through your school).  WJON
